Director Rob Marshall was able to utilize what he learned with the mermaids that were in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with Disney's The Little Mermaid remake. Back in 2011, when the fourth installment of the Pirates franchise was released, Marshall and producer John DeLuca never thought they'd make a whole movie that would be set underwater. They did, according to a conversation between DeLuca and Entertainment Weekly, learn a lot from that film.
