The Batman who stood between Ra’s al Ghul (Liam Neeson) and Gotham in Batman Begins was nearly portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal. David S. Goyer helped develop the story and write the screenplay for director Christopher Nolan’s first installment in The Dark Knight trilogy back in 2005. However, Gyllenhaal was Goyer's choice to portray Bruce Wayne/The Dark Knight in Batman Begins. The role was eventually won by Christian Bale, but Goyer said during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast:
